lol, I use whatever the hell the task at hand requires, I don't buy into the evangelism. If I need to complete a task that requires windows then I'll use windows, if a task requires linux I'll use linux. anyone who tries to tell me what I can and can't use is an authoritarian as far as I'm concerned and does not respect my freedom.

But Windows 10 is objectively terrible, bloated, and inefficient.

Chromium and Chrome are virtually identical, barring their status as closed- or open-source. The only real reason to choose Chromium over Chrome is purely ideological unless you actually plan on doing something with Chromium's source code.

I have quicker boot times and less ram usage than W7/8/8.1 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Likewise the telemetry while fuarking creepy (and it's present in 7/8/8.1 as soon as the W10 migration tool gets loaded by winupdate) it can rather easily be blocked at the network level.

If my hands are tied and I have _no choice_ but to run Windows, W10 is pretty comfy compared to it's predecessors. It gives me a slicker more consistent UI than 8/8.1 and it gives me multi-workspace support.

I mean it's not linux+WindowMaker and never will be but that's why I own multiple machines.

I know this is a bit off topic, but you can do more than just edit the hosts file. If one must use Windows for whatever reason, it might be worth taking a look.

 No.649

>>648
Yeap. Hosts file will do it, but I've got a network bandwidth monitoring/controlling application that I use to prevent svchost eating my entire smol ADSL pipe, and it also has built in rule definitions for blocking telemetry (and you can see how much traffic has been caught by that rule).

Some problematic components are out, but frankly, not enough of them are. Chromium still uses plenty of remote connections to Google services.

Many of the alternative Chromium builds that are aimed at the privacy-conscious have their own issues, ranging from the untrustworthiness of their corporate backers to sporadic releases that leave security holes unpatched.

could you describe your experience with Parabola? Have you been using it for a long time? I have been looking into GNU/Linux-libre distros and pretty much dismissed everything except Trisquel, which I am using on one computer currently, because other libre distros seemed like dead or near-dead projects; also, I was advised against it, and Trisquel fitted my specific needs for this computer.
Was I too hasty in my dismissal of other libre distros?
Would you describe it as just Arch, but with libre kernel, or have you experienced any other issues?

>could you describe your experience with Parabola?
Tricky and finicky, but so satisfying when it works. It's a very cathartic thing, and I like the feeling of UNLIMITED POWAH over my fully libre, highly customizable setup.
>Have you been using it for a long time?
Gad no, only a month. I have, in the past, used Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Crunchbang and TAILS. This is a bit of a step up!
>Was I too hasty in my dismissal of other libre distros?
There's merit in using Parabola if that's what you're up to. I'm in a pretty good position because my house has a soykafty old Win7 trashbag that I can use in a pinch if mine doesn't work, but if I didn't have that option I might have to depend more on a good out-of-the-box distro. In the end, Parabola is no less of a good idea to use than Arch, which is to say: a terrible idea, but only if you've made the wrong choice.
>Would you describe it as just Arch, but with libre kernel, or have you experienced any other issues?
I've never used Arch. I don't think there are any differences other than libre kernel and a lack of non-free repositories for pacman by default.

those test signals did always have a weird religious feel to them, especially with the "last thing that comes on in the middle of the night, after transmissions end, and everybody's asleep or half-asleep in a glowing twilight" feel. poor analogue tv…

I wouldn't use Elementary OS just for the reason that Daniel "Discount Steve Jobs" Fore is a pretentious little glitterboy who takes credit for hard work by other people and is whining about people not giving his project enough money. If I wanted the same look (I'm using their icons) I would install the Elementary theme in the OS of my choice.

Yeah, y'all don't understand the concept of having multiple computers. Only one of mine runs Windows 10, not just because I got bills to pay, but also because I need to constantly use Windows to learn more for my IT job. I also need Win10 for FL Studio, sure I do use DAWs on Linux, I just work best in FL.

Unfortunately, Linux is mostly used for servers and Windows is used for desktops so that's what I have to study.
