There are five reasons why I have to use Windows.
Hint: They're all on my desktop.
ssssshh. they don't get the concept that some people actually have to use their computers to pay the rent and buy food.
also inb4 use gimp and inkscape
also also inb4 use wine
I use Debian as well. You don't have to choose.
>>635>Bitches at OP for using Windows.>Uses a closed source browser.
But Windows 10 is objectively terrible, bloated, and inefficient.
Chromium and Chrome are virtually identical, barring their status as closed- or open-source. The only real reason to choose Chromium over Chrome is purely ideological unless you actually plan on doing something with Chromium's source code.
keep it relatively simple>>644
why would you trust google to not include malicious components in their builds that aren't in chromium? furthermore there is zero reason not to use arch's chromium package over chrome.
chromium has some "problematic" components stripped as well, which is an added bonus
I have quicker boot times and less ram usage than W7/8/8.1 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Likewise the telemetry while fuarking creepy (and it's present in 7/8/8.1 as soon as the W10 migration tool gets loaded by winupdate) it can rather easily be blocked at the network level.
If my hands are tied and I have _no choice_ but to run Windows, W10 is pretty comfy compared to it's predecessors. It gives me a slicker more consistent UI than 8/8.1 and it gives me multi-workspace support.
I mean it's not linux+WindowMaker and never will be but that's why I own multiple machines.
I know this is a bit off topic, but you can do more than just edit the hosts file. If one must use Windows for whatever reason, it might be worth taking a look.http://www.cyberpunkforums.com/viewtopic.php?id=3692
Yeap. Hosts file will do it, but I've got a network bandwidth monitoring/controlling application that I use to prevent svchost eating my entire smol ADSL pipe, and it also has built in rule definitions for blocking telemetry (and you can see how much traffic has been caught by that rule).
Some problematic components are out, but frankly, not enough of them are. Chromium still uses plenty of remote connections to Google services.
Many of the alternative Chromium builds that are aimed at the privacy-conscious have their own issues, ranging from the untrustworthiness of their corporate backers to sporadic releases that leave security holes unpatched.
I've never changed the background on any OS I've used. I don't rice. That's just me.
i love the windowmaker look (hence also my theme).>>653
this is really soothing for some reason
would you mind sharing that wallpaper? i didn't find it anywhere.
Background image please?
Is it a waste of time if we enjoy it?
+1 for dirt worship background
-1 for win10
All the girls are fine, they're just not Kaworu, though.
Just out of curiosity why elementary? Slow release cycles, a design style that simple strives to rip off macOS, what's the draw for you?
1. It's Linux
2. I can change anything I want and remove the restrictions if I really wanted to.
3. I don't have a mac anymore, a gtk theme like mine makes sense if i'm a mac user. whats the big deal.
The draw: It just worked. So I can work.
could you describe your experience with Parabola? Have you been using it for a long time? I have been looking into GNU/Linux-libre distros and pretty much dismissed everything except Trisquel, which I am using on one computer currently, because other libre distros seemed like dead or near-dead projects; also, I was advised against it, and Trisquel fitted my specific needs for this computer.
Was I too hasty in my dismissal of other libre distros?
Would you describe it as just Arch, but with libre kernel, or have you experienced any other issues?
Here are pictures of both my Laptop and Desktop.
My desktops a bit more proprietary.>>638
It shouldn't be something to be proud of that to work you have to violate your own freedoms. However, I can at least sympathize with OP for having to use such software.>>641
Nice, Always like some WindowMaker.>>672
Looks a lot like macOS, Pretty clean look.
(Not going to judge the distro, you can make it whatever you want)
>>677>could you describe your experience with Parabola?
Tricky and finicky, but so satisfying when it works. It's a very cathartic thing, and I like the feeling of UNLIMITED POWAH over my fully libre, highly customizable setup.>Have you been using it for a long time?
Gad no, only a month. I have, in the past, used Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Crunchbang and TAILS. This is a bit of a step up!>Was I too hasty in my dismissal of other libre distros?
There's merit in using Parabola if that's what you're up to. I'm in a pretty good position because my house has a soykafty old Win7 trashbag that I can use in a pinch if mine doesn't work, but if I didn't have that option I might have to depend more on a good out-of-the-box distro. In the end, Parabola is no less of a good idea to use than Arch, which is to say: a terrible idea, but only if you've made the wrong choice.>Would you describe it as just Arch, but with libre kernel, or have you experienced any other issues?
I've never used Arch. I don't think there are any differences other than libre kernel and a lack of non-free repositories for pacman by default.
wait comrade are you an anarchist or a Leninist
I'm getting mixed signals
He's obviously a Leninist, who else worships traditional USSR music and has a picture of Lenin on their screens at all times?
…he's got anarchist music.
Or just likes old music.
Nice seeing another Mac user on here
fucking kde clock always ruining the mood haha
I didn't post this since the split, but basically my rice didn't change in ages. >>681
sweet effect on the wallpaper, i like it.
(Dont know why it came out blurry)
Antergos doesn't support 32-bit unfortunately, otherwise I would. I'm planning on replacing the CPU for this machine, and then I'll be able to run Antergos.
>>702>Radeon X1300>Intel T2400
The only real difference between tat and my N3060 is probably the processor extensions tbh
That and my battery life.
I'm going to be replacing the T2400 with a T7200. The T60 doesn't support much, but the coreboot github wiki explains that the T7200 is the cheapest option with decent performance for this laptop.
Looks very pretty, have any dotfiles you could give? I want to make myself a better panel.
I'm an Anarcho Communist but I like me some soviet art.
It's not fair if I can't identify you :C
I love monochrome so much. Very nice setup.
Beautiful. Which distro? Is that cmus?
I hate windows, but holy fuck how did you do this.
it's simple. you just install bblean/blackbox/or whatever, patch widows reg and apply theme
more info here http://nanami-tan.info/
ricing widows is a hassle and you can easily brick your system. use gahnoo/loonix
it always ends up looking like fuarking trash with window borders flickering back and forth between BB/Windows decorations.
I haven't bothered with alternate window managers for Windows in a while as a result.
If you're stuck running Windows, W10's interface really isn't that bad.
It's still bad tbh.
Still waiting for fluent design come out.
How do you like xmonad? I've never used it
Still trying to mimic features from i3 like modes and mouse resizing of tiled windows, though. But overall only positive experience.
default Bunsenlabs because I cannot into ricing.
tfw every time you ask how to rice everyone says "fuck off"/"gitgud"/"it's a secret" like you're trying to ask a jew if they can spare some change
its a pretty stupid question, anon. theres not some directory somewhere called "L33tRice" that you just have to find, its installing and configuring soykaf.
>>647>it can rather easily be blocked at the network level.
There is no way to block the spying. The spying is OS level. Anything you do to try and block it is running ontop of the OS. You surrender all control over to Michael.
do you have some specific questions? or a wm you want to check out?
I'd love to learn more about ricing i3
He means blocking it on another computer the W10 computer has to go through to access the internet. Like the router. Though I Heard W10 "breaks" if you block telemetry like that.
this i3 and polybar.
well, install i3.
keep open the i3 user guide https://i3wm.org/docs/userguide.html
so you can always use as a reference, it explains everything very clearly.
just install it and read some docs (https://github.com/jaagr/polybar/wiki
) there' s not other way around it.
also, do you really need tiling? you could start ricing openbox since you already have that.
if you need help with something specific just ask.
nah, it doesn't.
obviously if you go full paranoid and block all the update servers you're going to be sitting on a rotting pile of unpatched vulns but that goes without saying.>>725
computers aren't magical m8
I also heard that microsoft constantly registers new servers to get around people doing that, though.
that ass font rendering can only be Windows
that's a cute anime girl on your desktop, care to share?
Ii think you meant ungoogled-chromium
I think he meant Firefox
I think he meant firefox with pyllyukko's usr.js
I think he meant elinks
That's an odd way to spell curl.
How's Enlightenment going?
I tried it close to 2 years ago & it kept crashing on me.
going well for me, crashed once in the three days ive used it, but I was able to recover without llosing any of my work.
with such a low posting frequency every post has a big impact. if you keep posting cropped pornography you will take this board in an unpleasant direction.
Only real rule is no bullsoykaf just cool soykaf
new colours time. does anyone have this dumb vimperator thing looking non-terrible? been having a hard time with pentadactyl dead X_X>>699
so very brown. having the patience for xmonad a cool, though>>760
those test signals did always have a weird religious feel to them, especially with the "last thing that comes on in the middle of the night, after transmissions end, and everybody's asleep or half-asleep in a glowing twilight" feel. poor analogue tv…
Love this. So clean, simple, and not meme-tier like most rice
>>743>nice colors>nice background>nosec noob Arch>two clocks
You're using sway? How is that working out for you?
I don't do much ricing but I think my desktop is pretty comfy >>672
I wouldn't use Elementary OS just for the reason that Daniel "Discount Steve Jobs" Fore is a pretentious little glitterboy who takes credit for hard work by other people and is whining about people not giving his project enough money. If I wanted the same look (I'm using their icons) I would install the Elementary theme in the OS of my choice.
>>637>Hint: They're all on my desktop.
Have to check in myself as a windows user
adobe suite is quintessential
Fucking uninstall Dw and Discord though
Do you happen to have any music saved from Kampflieder.de or other taken down YT channels that's not available anymore?
Cannnot post image, why is that? Size restriction?
drop files , and pape ?
you win the thread, i wish tails would boot on my laptop
i think i used to use that same wallpaper
>>634>Not using autohiding the taskbar>>638
Yeah, y'all don't understand the concept of having multiple computers. Only one of mine runs Windows 10, not just because I got bills to pay, but also because I need to constantly use Windows to learn more for my IT job. I also need Win10 for FL Studio, sure I do use DAWs on Linux, I just work best in FL.
Unfortunately, Linux is mostly used for servers and Windows is used for desktops so that's what I have to study.>>644>objectively
